OEM vs ODM vs OBM Cosmetics: Differences and Which to Choose for a New Brand
MPC Innovation Lab · · 6 min read
In cosmetics, OEM means the factory makes a product to your own specification, ODM means the factory designs and develops the product and you put your brand on it, and OBM means you own and sell your own brand. For most new brands the practical route is ODM, or OEM with a standard formula, because it lowers risk and minimum order size. Many factories, including MPC Innovation Lab, offer both OEM and ODM under one roof.
What is OEM in cosmetics?
OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) is a model where the brand owner supplies the concept and often the formula or detailed specification, and the factory manufactures it. In cosmetics, this is also called contract manufacturing.
OEM fits brands that already know exactly what they want, such as a specific formula, ingredient list or texture, and need a qualified factory to produce it consistently.
What is ODM in cosmetics?
ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) is a model where the factory designs and develops the product, including the formula, and the brand owner selects it, adjusts it and sells it under their own brand. The factory brings the R&D capability.
In practice ODM often means choosing a ready-made formula from the factory and customising details such as fragrance, colour and packaging. It is the fastest way to turn an idea into a branded product without in-house chemists.
What is OBM in cosmetics?
OBM (Original Brand Manufacturer) is a model where a company owns the brand and controls the product, marketing and sales. An OBM may still outsource production to an OEM or ODM factory, or may manufacture in its own plant.
OBM describes the brand-owner side of the business. It is the goal for most founders, and OEM or ODM are the ways to get there.
OEM vs ODM vs OBM: comparison
- Who develops the formula: OEM, usually the brand owner or a specified formula; ODM, the factory; OBM, the brand owner or its own R&D.
- Who owns the brand: OEM and ODM, the customer; OBM, the company itself.
- Typical entry barrier: ODM with a standard formula is generally the lowest; custom OEM or custom development is higher; OBM with its own factory is highest.
- Best for: ODM suits new brands testing the market; OEM suits brands with defined specifications; OBM suits companies building long-term brand ownership.
At MPC, for reference, standard formulas can start from 100 pieces and custom formulas from around 300 to 1,000 pieces, which shows how the choice affects order size.
Which model should a new brand choose?
A new brand should usually start with ODM using a standard formula, then move to a custom formula once sales justify it. This keeps the first order small and lets you validate demand.
Use this decision guide:
- No formulation background and want to launch with limited risk: choose ODM with a standard formula.
- Want a clearly differentiated product or a signature active ingredient: choose a custom formula (ODM development or OEM).
- Already own a proven formula: choose OEM and ask about tech transfer and scale-up.
- Plan to own manufacturing long term: start as ODM or OEM client, learn the process, and evaluate your own plant later.
What should you ask a factory before choosing?
- Do you offer both standard and custom formulas, and what are the minimum orders for each?
- Who owns the formula developed for me, and can I move production elsewhere? Agree this in writing.
- Which quality standards apply? MPC operates under ISO 9001:2015, ISO 22716:2007 (Cosmetic GMP) and CODEX GHPs.
- Do you also handle packaging, artwork and delivery?
- What documents will I receive for registration and notification? Confirm current Thai FDA requirements with the Thai FDA or the factory's documentation team.
How MPC works with brands
MPC Innovation Lab is a one-stop OEM/ODM cosmetics factory in Krathum Baen, Samut Sakhon, founded in 2019, with a team of cosmetic scientists who have more than 20 years of experience. The process runs from brief and concept, to formula, sample, confirmation, packaging and artwork, production, QC and delivery.
Whether your starting point is an idea, a reference product or a finished formula, the first step is a brief. From there, the team can advise whether OEM or ODM fits.
Frequently asked questions
What is the main difference between OEM and ODM?
In OEM the brand supplies the specification and the factory makes it, while in ODM the factory designs and develops the product and the brand sells it under its own name.
Is ODM cheaper than OEM for cosmetics?
Often ODM with a standard formula has the lowest entry cost, because development work is already done, but the real cost depends on formula, packaging and volume. Request a quote based on your brief.
Is OBM the same as private label?
No, private label describes a product made by a factory and sold under your brand, while OBM describes a company that owns and controls its brand, whether it outsources production or not.
Which is better for a first-time founder?
ODM with a standard formula is usually the safest first step, since it lets you launch with a small first order and test demand.
Can I switch from ODM to custom OEM later?
Yes, many brands launch with a standard formula and develop a custom formula for later products or upgrades. Discuss the roadmap with your factory early.
Does MPC offer both OEM and ODM?
Yes, MPC offers one-stop OEM/ODM services from formula development to packaging, production and delivery.
